Why did I decide to make this site?
As an artist who's "main space" so to say, was my instagram page, where simply posting whatever I wanted wasn't exactly working, I decided it's time for a change. To be honest, I started to get sick of social media. As of right now, Instagram's algorithm is simply mainting the popular users popular; they've taken out the recent section in hashtags, which for many it meant a massive drop in engagment; they're heavely pushing reels (which even those don't have a big reach) and they're putting ads and popular accounts in people's feed, which basically means people who follow you and who you follow, won't see much of you and others. I don't know about you, but me personally, I can't keep up with all of this mess. I also don't want to be the circus monkey that juggles all the things Instagram wants me to. I've been feeling very down lately, thanks to Instagram and I had a hard time to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Trying other social media? Yeah, I tried Twitter. Didn't really liked it there. And any more of other things seem to be a chore. I've realized, I don't want to make art for social media, but social media for my art (if it makes sense).
So, one day, I was watching youtube videos. That's when I came across a video that introduced me to neocities. It sounded very interesting so I decided to give it a try. And i'm so glad I did. What I've found here is just amazing! What some of neocities folks made blew my mind! There are so many super personalized sites with interesting features. To be honest, I felt like Alice in Wonderland haha. This option with endless possibilities sparked something in me (as melodramatic as it sounds, I promise it makes sense). The first time I've learned html was when I was a kid in middle school. I LOVED the idea that you can a create a virtual space with whatever things you want to have. So, I continued to study it on my own and I even got to a point where I started to learn css. However, I hit a wall at some point and that's when I stopped. Momentarily. In my teen and now adult age, I've had a few moments when I doubled in the site making process again, but it never really went anywhere. But now I'm excited to try my hands at this again and see how far I can go.
I know this won't guarantee me more followers or anything like that. But I don't care, cause that's not the point. The point is to have a space of my own, where I can do what I want, however I want it and whenever I want to. I feel like this gives me complete freedom to just go wild and do whatever. No more doom scrolling reels and watching whatever instagram throws at me. No more bad feelings. Only creativity and fun! And that's how it should be.
